Tales of a Long Distance Swimmer!

I have just been reading the autobiography

'Swimming to Antarctica:  Tales of a Long Distance Swimmer',
the story of the American long distance swimmer, Lynne Cox, and I have to say that it is a real page turner!

Great picture of Lynne Cox from The New Yorker

For me anyway....... I just could not put it down!

Lynne Cox was the youngest woman to swim across the English Channel.
I did not realise that they begin their swim in the black darkness of midnight!

They would often swim into one of Englands' thick enveloping fogs making it impossible to even see their own hand held in front of them, nor can they see their support team close by.

Sometimes after becoming disoriented, especially if currents change direction suddenly, the swimmer can be pulled into a shipping lane and tossed into the wake of a moving vessel!

Can you imagine that??

This story is about one of her first long distance swims.

As Lynne Cox moves on in her swimming career
she pushes herself to the limit to succeed in her unbelievable goals.

Her swim around the Cape of Good Hope where the waters are infested with poisonous snakes and all breeds of sharks, some of them reaching twenty eight feet in length, had me absolutely glued!

Cape of Good Hope

How scary would that be?........And there is so much more to this story which has left me gobsmacked!

This is such a great true story of courage and determination.
 I thoroughly recommend it!

  1. It's interesting how some people just have the need to do something.........
that is swimming in freezing cold waters for hours, days on end amongst the sharks! I'd rather stay home and knit wouldn't you?

    Ha! What a brave woman!
    Great story.
